Gai Waterhouse achieved a quinella in the 2011 Shannon Stakes last Saturday after her five-year-old gelding King Lionheart won the race ahead of equal favourite Fast Clip at Rosehill Racecourse.
King Lionheart won the 2011 by a length and was ridden in the race by jockey Tommy Berry.
“Didn’t Tom ride it a treat?” Waterhouse said after the race.
“He found the best going and really came away.
“There was a weight pull between the second favourite, Fast Clip, and King Lionheart so both horses have to be put in the little black book.
“That’s what (King Lionheart) will do in the Epsom, but I will talk to the owners (about Fast Clip), I’d like to take him to the Toorak and it gives him a little time to get over this run.”
Berry was thrilled with the winning result.
“Gai said ‘what do you want to do?’ and I said ‘why don’t we sit outside Fast Clip, we will tag off him and hopefully get past him,” Berry said.
“When he exploded I said bring it on because he really let down good, still wanted to do a little bit wrong, hanging down the straight but he has seriously put himself up as an Epsom contender if they want to go that way.
“He is a nice gross horse, he doesn’t push himself around, he only does what he has to.
“I have to thank Gai, she has put a lot of faith in me, it has been a long hard road but it is good to repay her today.”
Lone Command finished the Shannon Stakes 2011 in third, while equal favourite Secret Admirer finished 4.2 lengths away in fourth.
