Chris Waller has confirmed a two pronged attack in the 2016 Shannon Stakes field, undoubtedly spearheaded by talented short courser Counterattack.

Counterattack has been a strong and consistent performer for Waller throughout his entire racing career so far; posting four wins and a further seven minors through only seventeen competitive appearances.

Running an agonizingly-close second in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) before winning the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) most notably in autumn and winter, Counterattack was returned to the paddock after placing seventh in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).

Trialling well in the lead-up to his return this time, the Redoute’s Choice gelding ran a strong second in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) first-up and is sure to have taken plenty of benefit from the run.

Brenton Avdulla will take the ride on Counterattack in the Shannon Stakes from the ideal barrier 5.

Old North only managed to beat one runner home in the Theo Marks Stakes first-up, but is sure to relish a step-up to 1500m in the Shannon Stakes.

Running fourth in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 12th, Old North returned to winning form with a smart performance for success in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) on April 16th; returning to the paddock after placing fourth in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast.

Old North has the notable advantage of in-form hoop Tim Clark in the saddle, and will carry only 53kgs in the Shannon Stakes.

Entirely Platinum simply failed to fire in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) a fortnight ago but will relish a step back in class in the Shannon Stakes.

Producing an impressive six wins and nine minors through thirty career starts so far, the Pentire gelding ran third in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) first-up and should lay a great account for himself from barrier 2 this weekend.
