Washington Heights has drifted in 2017 Shannon Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, but remains a $3.10 favourite to win the race, ahead of Dawn Wall ($3.50) and Euro Angel ($6.50).

Will Washington Heights continue his smart return to Australian racing with a win in the Shannon Stakes 2017, or will one of his rivals post an upset?

Dawn Wall ($3.50)

Four-year-old Dawn Wall is arguably the class horse of the 2017 Shannon Stakes field and should take plenty of improvement into the race off an impressive first-up run at Randwick on September 2nd. The Fastnet Rock mare immediately stamped herself as a horse to follow upon debuting in January this year and beat a classy field to the line in the Group 3 Kembla Grange Classic (1600m) in only her fourth career appearance on March 10th. Sixth in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) on March 25th, Dawn Wall returned to winning form in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) on May 6th, but had clearly had enough by the time she finished ninth in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m). Dawn Wall was unlucky not to pip Washington Heights on the line in Schweppes BM95 (1400m) first-up this time, will be fitter for the run and is drawn ideally in barrier 2 on Saturday, with only 53kgs in tow.

Washington Heights ($3.10)

Washington Heights has been impressive through his three starts since returning to Australia and is the horse to beat in the Shannon Stakes. A smart winner of the Winning Post Restaurant BM93 (1200m) first-up on July 15th, the Commands gelding was badly held up and blocked for a run in the Canterbury RSL Spring Preview (1400m) on August 12th, but still managed to run on for fourth. Washington Heights had every right to concede the win to Dawn Wall last time out, but he was tough to the line and will subsequently be rock-hard fit for his run in the Shannon Stakes.

Good Project ($14)

Group 1 winner Good Project is sure to have taken plenty of benefit from his first-up run for sixth in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m), will enjoy a step up in distance and has the notable advantage of Hugh Bowman in the saddle. The Not A Single Doubt entire produced several typically strong results throughout 2016 and ended his year second in his defence of the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) in Perth. Having resumed for a hit-and-run fifth in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in winter, Good Project has been charged with carrying a race-high 59kgs in the Shannon Stakes, but has the class to overcome the weight.
